Chainsaw Man chapter 172 recap
Chainsaw Man’s defamation, his unfortunate assault, and Nayuta’s death all come crashing down on Denji in chapter 172.
After a country-wide disaster by the Chainsaw Man cult, high school student Asa Mitaka (Yoru) hatches a plan to separate Denji’s human side from his evil counterpart. She – and a few unlikely allies – saves Chainsaw Man from Public Safety HQ, pieces him together, and learns his secret identity.
One thing leads to another, and the Katana Devil, Asa Mitaka, Yoru, Devil Hunter Club members, Fami, and Denji all end up at a sushi restaurant where they meet Barem Bridge, the Chainsaw Man Church’s second-in-command.
Barem reveals to the group that they need the Chainsaw Devil to stop an impending apocalypse. To do so, they needed everyone to fear Chainsaw Man, and Denji’s “true unhappiness”. So they conspired with the Fire Devil to massacre the public with Chainsaw Man clones before killing Denji’s adoptive sister Nayuta.
The Church’s plan works. In a fit of mindless rage, Denji pulls Barem’s head off before transforming into the black Chainsaw Man.
Public Safety is quick to act, dispatching a new squad of half-devils on the scene. Denji makes short work of them, however, and ends up consuming the Ear Devil.
In the last arc, it’s revealed that any devil the Chainsaw Devil eats gets erased from existence. The last panels show the Katana Devil asking where Denji is and Yoru realizing that their ears are all gone.
