Demon Slayer season 4 episode 2 recap
WARNING: Spoilers for those who haven’t watched Demon Slayer season 4 yet. This recap is taken from chapters 130 and 131 of the manga.
Episode 2 spotlighted the series’ most enigmatic Pillar, the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka.
The episode opens with Tanjiro approaching Giyu, sensing the Water Hashira’s growing internal turmoil. As it turns out, Tomioka is troubled by Tanjiro’s lack of progress with the Water Breathing techniques.
Giyu explained that the position of Water Hashira within the Demon Slayer Corps is currently vacant, and Tomioka wants Tanjiro to succeed him.
As it turns out, Tanjiro was ordered by Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, to reason with Giyu. The organization grew weary of the Water Hashira constantly pushing away those who offered him help.
Finally, the episode explored the root of Giyu’s guilt. Giyu confessed to Tanjiro that he had never actually passed the Final Selection exam, a brutal test for aspiring Demon Slayers.
We previously witnessed Tanjiro passing this exam by defeating a monstrous demon on Mount Fujikasane in season 1 of the anime.
Giyu recounted entering the Final Selection alongside Sabito, another young boy whose family was killed by demons.
Sabito possessed exceptional strength for a newcomer, single-handedly eliminating all the demons he encountered during the exam. After saving an injured Giyu, Sabito continued to aid other struggling recruits.
Seven days after the exam, Giyu awoke to find himself a Demon Slayer, along with the remaining participants. However, Sabito was nowhere to be found. He had perished during the Final Selection.
Wracked with survivor’s guilt, Tomioka revealed that he kept his distance from the other Hashira. He felt unworthy to stand among them as an equal, believing he shouldn’t have become a Demon Slayer at all.
