Hunter x Hunter chapter 404 recap
The chapter began with Kurapika discussing Nen coins with Third Prince Zhang Lei. Kurapika suggested that the hypothesis regarding the coins changing after 10 days was confirmed. He explained that materializing something with Nen normally required limits, but distributing ownership across a large population lowered the cost, making mass creation possible.
The coins needed further investigation to understand their effects. Kurapika proposed comparing the coin Zhang Lei possessed with another transferred to someone else.
One of Zhang Lei’s assistants noticed a difference between his coin and the one on the table. Zhang Lei agreed to test this by transferring the coin to his assistant, while Kurapika internally debated the risks of accepting it, suspecting a semi-compulsive manipulation ability.
When the transfer occurred, Kurapika observed that both the number and design on the coin changed, which confirmed that ownership reset certain properties of the coins.
However, when the coin was returned to Zhang Lei, the design reverted to its original form, but the number changed.
Kurapika theorized that the accumulation of Nen was tied to these coins, suggesting that when the number reached 100 quadrillion, the owner would gain Nen abilities without rigorous training. He also warned that the ability likely carried some form of manipulation risk.
Zhang Lei was impressed, and Kurapika kept some of his suspicions to himself. As a skilled negotiator, he believed the Prince would remain an ally as long as the hierarchy was respected. He realized that the Prince wanted him to withhold information about certain abilities for strategic reasons, aiming to accumulate enough power to activate Nen abilities under specific conditions.
The scene then shifted to Cheadle and her medical team as they examined Prince Halkenberg. He was unresponsive, but his body showed no signs of trauma. Halkenberg, through his Nen ability, had initiated a personality transfer with his subordinate Balsamico.
Balsamico reported to Prince Benjamin that Halkenberg had been transferred to a hospital. Prince Benjamin sent royal and military doctors to monitor Halkenberg’s condition.
Reflecting on his ability, Halkenberg concluded that the transferred personality overrode the original one, with priority given to the initiator of the ability. He wondered what would happen if the original body died first and considered testing this theory soon. He contemplated the sacrifices required to succeed in the Succession War and resolved to use his ability strategically to achieve his goal.
In another scene, Fourth Prince Tserriednich continued his intense training. Although he was frustrated by his inability to reduce the time it took to achieve his goal, he remained determined to push forward, calculating that it might take up to two weeks to reach the desired results.
Observing his dedication, others realized the Prince’s perception of time and effort was beyond that of an ordinary person.
As the Succession War continued, tensions built among the princes. Kurapika, sitting with the guards, questioned why Second Prince Camilla, who had previously been absent, decided to participate now. One guard speculated that she may have recognized the advantages of gathering information or had hidden motives.
The chapter closed with a brief glimpse of the Phantom Troupe discussing their plans to head to the Fourth Layer. Nobunaga, Feitan, and Phinks debated how to deal with their enemies, with Nobunaga advocating for gathering more information before launching an attack.
