In Kaiju no 8 chapter 120, Kafka Hibino awakens from his trance and returns to the battlefield to save vice captain Soshiro Hoshina’s life. Observers in the Defense Force command center are surprised at Kafka’s return to his Kaiju no 8 form but question his ability to defeat Kaiju no 9.
Kaiju no 9 attacked Kafka, exposing his monster core, but Kafka remained unfazed. He began to power up, surprising Hoshina. Kafka recalled the incident from his childhood that changed his life. He was the first to notice an impending Kaiju attack on their neighborhood and reported it, but could do nothing more.
Kafka reflected on his past wish to have been a Defense Force commander with a ninety-nine percent release force, a skilled fighter with a top-notch sword or gun, or a superhero capable of defeating thousands of monsters.
Kafka lamented that had he not been a powerless child, he could have saved their house built by his father, the stationery store where his grandmother bought him a toy pencil case, the restaurant where his mother worked part-time, the park where he played with his third-grade classmates, his game console he saved up to buy, and even Mina Ashiro’s calico cat.
The chapter concluded with Kafka powering up further, breaking the black skin covering his Kaiju body.
