Now, the highly-anticipated moment has arrived — the animation of Luffy’s newest and strongest form yet, Gear 5. As Luffy reaches his peak form, creator Eiichiro Oda promises to redefine the boundaries of the character’s power in his quest to become the King of the Pirates.
What is Luffy Gear 5 in One Piece?
Gear 5, also known as Gear Fifth, represents the pinnacle of Luffy’s power in One Piece.
This ultimate form is the awakened state of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that grants Luffy’s body the properties of rubber. In Gear 5, Luffy gains an unprecedented level of mastery over his rubbery abilities.
In this form, Luffy’s body undergoes a transformation, where his hair and clothes take on a white hue, while his eyes emit a glow with red ring-like pupils. Additionally, a cluster of white clouds appears to encircle him.
When activated, Gear 5 grants Luffy the ability to instantaneously alter his bulk, rendering him flexible and agile. Moreover, this awakened state allows him to manipulate surfaces, including the very ground he stands on, transforming it into a malleable and stretchable surface reminiscent of rubber.

When will Luffy Gear 5 be animated?
In one of the scenes in One Piece Film Red, Luffy’s Gear 5 made a brief debut. This scene in the movie, which premiered on August 6, 2022, gave fans a glimpse of the power of Gear 5 ahead of its full introduction in the anime series.
The debut took place during a fight scene in Film Red, where Luffy found himself locked in a battle against Uta. Fighting alongside Shanks, Luffy transitioned from Gear 4 to Gear 5.

Luffy’s Gear 5 debuted in the anime on August 6 at 9:30 a.m. JST, premiering in episode 1,071 in Japan.
Titled “Luffy’s Peak – Attained! GEAR5,” the episode focused on the protagonist’s showdown against Kaidou, known as the world’s “Strongest Creature.”
A 30-second teaser clip was unveiled during One Piece Day 2023. It showcased a glimpse of Luffy’s newfound power in action, as he grabs and delivers a powerful punch to Kaidou’s dragon form.
