Hunter x Hunter chapter 406 teases a possible confrontation between Nen powerhouses Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe.
The pursuit led by Chrollo suggests that their paths may finally cross, reigniting their fierce rivalry.
Tensions are high as Finks, Feitan, and Nobunaga navigate the ship, preparing for the unknown that awaits them.
With the Succession War still raging, this potential encounter could shift alliances and intensify the chaos surrounding them.
Hunter x Hunter chapter 405 recap
The chapter began with a scene depicting a man smiling as he played cards, repeatedly saying, “One more, one more.” Two elderly onlookers discussed the nature of the game, with the woman noting that poker typically uses a single deck.
The man responded that this version was “QX,” a type of poker involving multiple decks. The game, referred to as “503,” allowed players to add cards until they formed identical sets.
Winning meant the bet would be multiplied by the number of successful plays of “one more,” but quitting was not an option. This high-stakes variation had seen many players fail, earning it the nickname “Go to Heaven.”
The player was revealed to be Hisoka, enjoying the game amidst the tension of the Succession War. The scene shifted to Hisoka’s internal monologue as he walked through the casino, expressing his disinterest in recent major events like the extermination of the Chimera Ants and the manifestation of group abilities aided by Nen Beasts.
Hisoka admitted to finding these occurrences unimpressive, revealing that he only felt excitement in one-on-one, life-or-death duels with other humans.
Hisoka reassured himself that he was content being alone and not opposed to occasional entertainment. The scene then transitioned to a figure resembling Hisoka, who hid nearby. This impostor expressed surprise at not encountering the real Hisoka in a VIP casino and considered whether he was a decoy.
A flashback between Chrollo and Bonolenov revealed the two were setting a trap. Chrollo instructed Bonolenov to stay in areas frequented by the mafia, anticipating that one of them would eventually invite him to a luxury suite. Chrollo explained that allowing Hisoka to move freely in mafia territory posed a threat to their reputation and balance.
The mafia, unable to recruit figures like Hisoka, would see the Phantom Troupe as wild cards. This led to the decision that if the mafia perceived Hisoka as isolated elsewhere, the troupe could search for him without hindrance while maintaining appearances.
The scene returned to the present, where the fake Hisoka surmised that the real Hisoka had probably gained access to the upper level through a prince’s invitation.
Bonolenov, now disguised as an owl using his transformation ability “Metamorphosis,” noted that he could only maintain the form for as long as he had spent interacting with the target. His power had limitations, particularly against Hisoka, as he could only observe and report back.
A tense moment followed when Lynch, a mafia member, confronted the impostor Hisoka. Although the fake maintained his composure, he realized he had slipped up by speaking aloud.
Lynch, using her ability to read a person’s true intent, concluded that he was an impostor and a potential threat, either allied with Hisoka or the Phantom Troupe. This led to an order to alert Hinrigh and prioritize eliminating the fake.
Bonolenov’s plan involved luring the infusion specialist away and transforming again after deceiving him. He strategized that even if the woman’s body was discovered, it would not implicate Hisoka directly, avoiding unnecessary escalation.
Bonolenov reflected on Chrollo’s desire to resolve the matter personally, hinting at the boss’s shock from the incidents involving Shalnark and Kortopi. The cycle of strategic restraint continued as Chrollo sought the opportunity to handle Hisoka himself.
The chapter shifted to a televised announcement recalling the unsolved murder of Mr. Risenorth, president of the Mama Help Foundation. It highlighted public sentiment, the victim’s legacy, and skepticism toward media narratives. The scene then cut to Nobunaga, Phinks, and Wang of the Cha-R family discussing recent developments.
Nobunaga raised suspicions about the changing dynamics within the mafia families aboard the ship, pointing out that new leadership complicated the ability to predict actions.
Wang explained that Morena, the new leader of the Heil-Ly family, was a royal descendant without succession rights. This status allowed her to command her mafia faction while remaining largely enigmatic.
Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan speculated on Morena’s goal, noting that while conventional mafia groups preserved balance, Morena’s tactics were far more destructive.
Nobunaga theorized that her group’s actions aimed to obliterate everyone on board, seeing the voyage as a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to amass power through Nen-fueled sacrifices.
The narrative concluded with Morena discussing her plans with her subordinates. She plotted to use the upcoming funeral for Prince Halkenburg as a chance to strike, revealing Dogman, a Level 2 Enhancer capable of detecting Nen types within a five-meter range. Morena expressed confidence in their preparations and readiness for revenge against the Cha-R family.
As the chapter ended, Finks, Feitan, and Nobunaga walked through dark corridors, preparing for the challenges ahead. The final panel hinted at the impending clash between Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe, setting the stage for the fierce battles to come.
