The Rurouni Kenshin series, also known as Samurai X, is based on a manga series by Nobuhiro Watsuki, which was adapted to an anime from 1996 to 1997 by Studio Gallop and then by Studio Deen in 1997 and 1998.

Linden Films, the same studio behind Tokyo Revengers, will adapt the latest Rurouni Kenshin anime. The series also has five live-action films directed by Keishi Otomo from 2012 to 2021.

What is the Rurouni Kenshin 2023 anime?
The anime follows the story of a wandering swordsman with a dark past. Although Kenshin wields a katana, it is important to note that he is not a samurai. Instead, he is renowned as a legendary assassin who gained significant fame during the Meiji restoration.

After engaging in numerous violent clashes, the man known as Bakumatsu, or “Battousai the Slayer,” made a significant choice to withdraw from the war, determined to prevent further bloodshed. He solemnly pledged never to take another life again.
In the 11th year of the Meiji era, Kenshin traveled to Tokyo, embarking on a path that would intersect with Kaoru Kamiya, a skilled female Kendo school owner. Despite his sincere efforts to lead a virtuous life, the shadows of his troubled history persistently haunt him, unrelentingly seeking to reclaim his present.

The anime premiered from July 7 to December 15, 2023, and the second season is scheduled to return in 2024.

Status of the manga
The original manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from April 1994 to September 1999. The manga consisted of 28 volumes and was later reprinted into 22. There were eight more volumes released in 2023.
