During the Aniplex Online Fest on September 17, 2024, Japanese animation studio Liden Films officially announced that the anime’s second season would be part of the Fall 2024 anime lineup.
Fans of the franchise will finally get to see what comes next for Kenshin Himura, the wandering swordsman.
What is Rurouni Kenshin?
The Rurouni Kenshin manga, created by Nobuhiro Watsuki, was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, one of Japan’s most popular manga magazines, published by Shueisha. The series ran from April 25, 1994, to September 21, 1999.
The anime adaptation initially aired as a TV series from 1996 to 1998, and this new version by Linden Films is a fresh reboot of the classic story.
Set in Japan’s early Meiji period, the series follows Himura Kenshin, a former assassin who has sworn to live peacefully.

Season 1 of Rurouni Kenshin introduces the story of Himura Kenshin, a wandering swordsman who has vowed never to kill again after his dark past as the assassin Hitokiri Battosai.
Kenshin traveled across Japan during the Meiji period, helping those in need with his impressive swordsmanship, all while using a reverse-bladed sword that symbolized his pledge to protect life rather than end it.
Upon arriving in Tokyo, Kenshin meets Kamiya Kaoru, the owner of a small dojo. After defending her school from a group of thugs, Kaoru invites Kenshin to stay at her dojo.
Over time, Kenshin forms a close-knit group of friends, including Myojin Yahiko, a streetwise kid with dreams of becoming a swordsman, and Sagara Sanosuke, a brawler with a tough exterior but a heart of gold.
Throughout the first season, Kenshin faces numerous challenges, including enemies from his past and new threats to the peace he’s trying to uphold. The primary antagonist is Makoto Shishio, a former assassin like Kenshin, who plots to overthrow the government and bring chaos to Japan.
As Shishio’s plan unfolds, Kenshin realizes he must step back into the fray, abandoning his peaceful life to confront the dangerous forces threatening the country’s future.
