Solo Leveling Arise is one of the most anticipated games this 2024.
Developed by Netmarble, this action-packed RPG brings the beloved story and characters of the manhwa to life on both PC and mobile platforms.
The game is free to play, meaning there’s no initial cost to jump into the action. However, some of the most sought-after characters and weapons can only be obtained through its gacha system.
In an interview with Dot Esports, Seong-Keon Jin, Netmarble’s lead developer for the game, offers insight into the Solo Leveling Arise gacha system.
What is Netmarble’s rationale behind Solo Leveling Arise being a gacha game
In the interview, Seong-Keon Jin explained that the team had to carefully consider how to generate revenue from the game, and concluded that the gacha system is the best option for both free-to-play (F2P) and paying players.
“It is an effective business model that is widely understood and easily accessible,” Seong-Keon Jin stated.
Gacha, derived from the Japanese term “gachapon,” is a game mechanic where players can obtain characters, items, or other in-game content through a random draw system, much like the vending machines that dispense trinkets in capsules.
To make it more accessible for F2P players, the developer added systems that “increase the probability of obtaining items” based on how many attempts the player made to get a certain character or weapon.
This confirms the presence of a similar pity system that’s present in many popular gacha titles like HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail.
While the gacha mechanic may offer paying players an advantage, it also provides free-to-play (F2P) players with an opportunity to catch up over time as they continue to play the game.
Solo Leveling Arise comes out on May 8, 2024, on PC, Android, and IOS.
