Who is Gyomei Himejima?
The Stone Hashira’s first appearance in the manga and anime
Gyomei first appeared in Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer manga in chapter 45, Hashira Meeting. The anime adaptation followed suit, introducing him in episode 23, also titled Hashira Meeting.
While Gyomei was first introduced in the Hashira Meeting arc, the Stone Hashira is mainly featured in the Hashira Training arc and Infinity Castle arc, where his immense strength and unwavering spirit come to the forefront.
Gyomei’s appearance is as striking as his personality. Towering over most at an impressive seven feet tall, his physique is a testament to his raw power. His blindness is accentuated by his thick, closed eyelids and prominent scars etched across his forehead.
He keeps his black hair short and often wears the standard demon hunter uniform, though his immense size necessitates a specially tailored green haori.
Gyomei Himejima’s backstory
Gyomei’s backstory is one of hardship and resilience. Born blind, he found family by caring for nine orphaned children. Despite poverty, they lived a happy life together.
Tragedy struck when one of the children, fearing a demon attack, disobeyed Gyomei’s orders and led a demon into their temple. The demon slaughtered most of the children, leaving Gyomei wracked with guilt for his perceived weakness.
Fueled by a newfound strength, Gyomei fought the demon until sunrise, protecting the only surviving child, Sayo. However, due to Sayo’s traumatized state, the villagers falsely accused Gyomei of the murders.
Only the intervention of the Demon Slayer leader saved him from execution. This event and his encounter with the demon would shape Gyomei into the formidable slayer he is today.
How tall is Gyomei Himejima?
The Stone Pillar stands at an impressive 7’2″ (220 cm).
How old is Gyomei Himejima?
Gyomei’s age varies depending on the part of the story, but he’s typically depicted in his late-20s.
How strong is Gyomei Himejima?
Gyomei’s strength is legendary among the Demon Slayers. Perhaps the most telling example is his grueling training regimen. In the Hashira Training Arc, he casually pushes a massive boulder several times his size, leaving even the other Hashira speechless.
This raw power translates directly into combat. Gyomei wields a giant spiked mace and cleaver with unmatched skill, capable of easily cleaving through demons.
His immense strength even surprised Upper Rank One Kokushibo, a seasoned fighter who had lived for centuries. Gyomei’s resilience is equally impressive.
He has endured brutal attacks from powerful demons and continued fighting, a testament to his ironclad will and physical fortitude.
