Who is Obanai Iguro
The Serpent Hashira’s first appearance in the manga and anime
Obanai first appeared in Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer manga in chapter 45, Hashira Meeting. The anime adaptation followed suit, introducing him in episode 23, also titled Hashira Meeting.
Obanai has a pale complexion and striking black hair styled in short and long strands. Notably, his mouth is always covered by bandages.
He dons the standard Demon Slayer uniform with a unique twist — a black and white pinstriped haori that reaches his hands.
Obanai never ventures far without his constant companion, a white snake named Kaburamaru, coiled around his shoulders.
Obanai Iguro’s backstory
Obanai’s backstory is a chilling tale of resilience in the face of unimaginable horror. Born into a family that worshipped a monstrous snake demon, Obanai endured a nightmarish childhood.
This creature demanded child sacrifices, and Obanai’s family sacrificed their own to appease it. A rare anomaly, Obanai was the first male child born into the family in generations, marked by unique eyes with limited vision.
The demon intended to devour him when he grew older. Obanai found solace in a white snake he named Kaburamaru, a creature that became his close companion.
At the age of twelve, Obanai’s world shattered completely. He was forced to endure a barbaric ritual, his mouth mutilated to resemble the demon he was meant to serve.
Fueled by terror and a desperate will to survive, Obanai finally escaped his captivity. The monstrous serpent demon pursued him until the Flame Hashira of the time arrived, saving Obanai from a gruesome death.
This encounter became a pivotal moment in Obanai’s life. It led him to the Demon Slayer Corps, a place where he could channel his trauma into a burning desire to eradicate demons.
His exceptional talent with the blade blossomed under the Corps’ training, and he eventually mastered the unique Serpent Breathing Style.
Through relentless training and unwavering determination, Obanai rose through the ranks, conquering every challenge to claim the title of Serpent Hashira.
