Call of Duty Warzone Mobile has officially been launched worldwide, with fans already jumping in to be the last man standing.
To celebrate this launch, Activision held a special launch event in Tokyo, Japan.
ONE Esports had the priviledge to participate in the event, and check out everything planned to commemorate this launch.
Warzone Mobile launch event at ZeroBASE Shibuya
ZeroBASE Shibuya, the venue for the event, was adorned with intricate Warzone Mobile artwork and props, completely immersing visitors in the Call of Duty universe.
Upon entering, the atmosphere was charged with excitement as eager fans anticipated exploring the array of planned activities.
Among the array of offerings were colossal gacha machines, brimming with a variety of prizes such as Warzone Mobile-themed merchandise.
Additionally, there was a Monster Energy drink booth to ensure visitors stayed refreshed, alongside hands-on booths where players could immerse themselves in the Warzone Mobile experience.
Members of the media were subsequently escorted to an exclusive chamber, where we were greeted with a welcome message by Co-Head of Mobile at Activision Chris Plummer announcing the launch of Warzone Mobile globally, and how excited they are for the fans in Southeast Asia to play.
Furthermore, development insights were shared by none other than Tom Hess, an executive producer at Activision, before we got to try the game out for ourselves.
Exclusive developer’s insights about Warzone Mobile
The media teams were given the opportunity to pose questions to Tom Hess prior to the event for him to answer.
Questions spanned a variety of topics, including the key principles guiding the game’s development, the objectives set for Warzone Mobile given the existence of Call of Duty Mobile in the market, and insights into the future content planned for the game following its launch.
In essence, the primary aim of the development team was to deliver a complete Warzone experience on mobile devices, encompassing everything from maps and vehicles to contracts, all while maintaining the quintessential Warzone gameplay enjoyed on PC and consoles.
Additionally, their aim was to establish a seamless integration across their latest Call of Duty titles, encompassing Modern Warfare 3, Warzone, and Warzone Mobile.
This integration enables players to experience continuous account progression, irrespective of the device they are using, a feature that Call of Duty Mobile does not offer.
As for future content like the addition of Al Mazrah Warzone map, Tom Hess emphasized that shared Call of Duty technology brings access to content pipelines across the franchise, enabling them to add content to Warzone Mobile that exists in games like Modern Warfare 3.
We already see that in Multiplayer, with Shoot House and Shipment being available in the game at launch.
Finally, he spoke on one of their key goals, which is to ensure that the game is playable across a wide range of mobile devices.
Again, another benefit of the shared Call of Duty technology is that they can scale high fidelity assets to fit players devices while maintaining consistency of in-game assets.
Players also have the ability to prioritize between visual fidelity or functional fidelity during their gameplay.
Hands-on with Warzone Mobile
Upon the conclusion of the presentation, we had the opportunity to test Warzone Mobile firsthand using an ASUS ROG Phone 8.
Our initial impression was how seamlessly the game transitioned to the mobile platform, with familiar movement mechanics, animations, sound effects, and an intricately crafted map of Verdansk, all optimized for mobile devices.
In terms of graphical fidelity, the game left a strong impression on us with its smooth frame rates, and a level of visual quality that is impressive for a mobile game.
Importantly, it manages to maintain visibility of on-screen enemies enabling quick target identification. As for controls, we were impressed by the extensive customization options available.
Players have the flexibility to arrange UI elements on the screen to their liking, adjusting their size and visibility to suit individual preferences.
Furthermore, the responsiveness of the controls was exceptional, facilitating quick and precise aiming crucial for surviving intense gunfights and striving to be the last one standing.
In addition to touchscreen controls, we also spent time playing the game with phones equipped with Backbone One controllers.
This provides a console-like gaming experience, great for console primary gamers to easily translate their skills from Warzone to Warzone Mobile.
As the event drew to a close, we departed with a profound appreciation for the game, and a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in adapting the iconic Warzone gameplay for mobile devices.
