Epic Games has announced its Fortnite competitive roadmap for the rest of 2020.

Similar to other major esports events affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the much-awaited Fortnite World Cup (FWC) will not be happening this year.

The news was confirmed on the official Fortnite Competitive Twitter. It was also revealed that due to technical limitations and online lag, a cross-region online competition of the Fortnite World Cup will not be happening.

However, the tournament organizers are keen on bringing back FWC next year once the global situation improves.

“We don’t know when a return to large, global, in-person events will be practical, but we’re hopeful to be able to put on some form of Fortnite World Cup in 2021,” according to a tweet.

At the young age of 16, Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf made it through the gaming headlines last year in July as he dominated the Fortnite World Cup Solo Finals. Bugha took home US$3 million and has been a familiar name in the scene ever since.

Fortnite players will still be able to catch all the intense esports action, as the remainder of its competitions will be held online. This includes the Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) for Champion League Duos players, the Fortnite Cash Cup, and other third-party events.

Official broadcasts will now be more frequent, as the Fortnite Twitch channel will cover upcoming online competitions starting with the FNCS Invitational.

Fortnite is also holding other digital events to keep players entertained during the pandemic. The Astronomical concert featuring American rapper Travis Scott has amassed 27.7 million unique players in-game.
