This Gyarados EX deck exclusively runs Water Energy due to Gyarados’ heavy Water investment.
Druddigon is crucial for this deck’s early game success. Since evolving Greninja and Gyarados requires multiple turns, having Druddigon out can buy valuable time. Its ability to stall early on allows you to set up your bench without immediate pressure. Ideally, you want to start the game with Druddigon in the active position to maximize its stalling potential.
Keep in mind that since this deck only runs Water Energy, Druddigon’s job is to simply occupy the active spot until you’re ready to bring in Greninja or Gyarados.
Whilst Druddigon is holding down the fort, prioritize attaching Water Energy to your benched Magikarp/Gyarados EX as this will be your main attacking Pokemon. Always reserve Misty for use on Gyarados EX as neither Greninja nor Druddigon need it.
Greninja’s role in this deck is to provide free supplementary damage output thanks to its Water Shuriken Ability. You can either use Water Shuriken alongside Gyarados EX’s Rampaging Whirlpool attack to pump out 160 damage total on your opponent’s active Pokemon, or chip away at their benched Pokemon for 20 damage each turn.
Watch out for decks that run backline snipers like Zebstrika or Lumineon as they have attacks that can knock out Magikarp on the bench with one attack. If you see these Pokemon appear, be mindful of when to put Magikarp in play so it doesn’t get picked off before evolving.
