After an incredibly long silence, Bungie has finally revealed what’s next for Destiny 2. Earlier this year, after the launch of The Final Shape, the Seattle-based studio revealed Codename Frontiers, a new beginning for Destiny 2 after the conclusion of its year 10 Episodes.
Destiny 2 2025 Roadmap details
Now, Bungie has finally revealed what Codename Frontiers is all about, including an overview of what Destiny fans can expect going forward.
Two New Destiny 2 expansions coming in 2025
Bungie is completely changing Destiny 2’s release structure by ditching its annual expansion packs for not one but two expansions in 2025.
Expansion 1 Codename Apollo will be released in the summer of 2025, whereas Expansion 2 Codename Behemoth will launch in the winter of 2025.
Both expansions will introduce new stories, locations, missions, weapons, gear, raids, and dungeons.
In addition to this, Bungie will release four seasonal updates that will be free for all players. The first seasonal update, Codename: Arsenal, will be released in the summer of 2025, whereas the second update, Codename: Surge, will be released in the winter of 2025.
All seasonal content will include new and reprised activities, gear, artifact mods, events, season passes, and more.
Get Ready for non-linear Destiny 2 campaigns in 2025
Perhaps the most intriguing bit of news from the Destiny 2 2025 roadmap reveal is that new expansions will feature non-linear campaigns. Apollo and Behemoth will ditch the one-shot campaign structure that has been going on since Shadowkeep for more unusual formats.
According to the game director Tyson Green, it could resemble metroidvanias, roguelikes, or even survival shooters. Each new expansion will feature a different campaign structure but retain the intricate storytelling Destiny fans are used to.
Codename: Apollo kicks off Destiny 2’s new multiyear saga
Goodbye Light and Darkness Saga, welcome, Apollo. Destiny 2’s next multiyear saga begins with Codename: Apollo in the summer of 2025. Bungie has yet to reveal what Apollo will be about, but players should expect some teases in the upcoming Episodes Revenant and Heresy.
Destiny 2 Codename: Apollo will be a non-linear character-driven adventure. According to game director Alison Lührs, “In Codename: Apollo, our story takes place over dozens of threads you’ll explore and discover. So, when you land on our brand new location, the story starts at A, and then you can choose if you want to explore C first, or try and get into B, or maybe investigate D.”
Lührs also confirmed that the options you don’t explore the first time will be there for you to go back and play through, which should increase the replayability of campaigns.
Additionally, Apollo will not feature any time-gated content, and the story will progress based on players’ progression.
Destiny 2’s future suddenly seems bright despite all the negativity surrounding the community since the recent mass layoffs at Bungie.
Hopefully, the studio will have more to show rather than tell about all the stuff that’s coming to Destiny 2 in 2025 and beyond.
