Diablo 4 Tempering is an item upgrade system that grants huge buffs for various skills. This is done by applying “affixes” to your Legendary and Rare items, which can all stack to give your build absurdly powerful stats.
That said, the system can be confusing for new players trying out the latest Diablo 4 content. You can also miss out on good rolls if you don’t Temper correctly.
Diablo 4 Tempering guide
Learn everything you need to know about Tempering in Diablo 4 with our guide below.
How to Temper items in Diablo 4?
You unlock tempering at Level 15 after completing the “Tempering” priority quest, which you receive automatically.
The quest requires you to travel to Kyovashad and talk to the Blacksmith there. Finish the mission, and you’ll receive a “Tempering Manual” specific to your build.
Right-click a manual to learn it and unlock a new recipe at the Blacksmith. Afterwards, go to a Blacksmith, click on the anvil icon to access the Tempering tab, and select the item you want to affix.
Diablo 4 items can have two affixes in their “Tempering Slots” except Unique and Sacred items, which only house one.
Diablo 4 Temper manuals
Temper Manuals contain “recipes” (lists of affixes/skill boosts) that can enhance your best items. These range from Magic, Rare, and Legendary tiers, each possessing higher possible rolls than the last.
Diablo 4 Temper Manuals are highly specific and apply to the most prominent skills of each class to make them even stronger.
Applying the same manual to six pieces of gear is possible, and can elevate your playstyle to devilishly new heights. But there’s more to it.
What is Temper Durability?
You may choose to reroll a stat for your preferred upgrade. Temper Durability decides how many attempts (or “Tempering Charges”) you get, and that number is shared between your Tempered Slots.
Additionally, an item can also have a “Greater Affix”, increasing its Temper Durability and your chances of pulling your favorite affix.
It’s worth noting that filling an empty Tempering Slot does not count towards that item’s Temper Durability in Diablo 4. You can also reset your item in case you want a clean slate.
How to get more Diablo 4 Tempering Charges?
A Scroll of Restoration is a rare consumable that restores four Tempering Charges on an item. You can see how many are left on the lower left of the item’s tooltip labelled “Tempers”.
And that’s everything you need to know about Diablo 4 Tempering!
