Persona 5 The Phantom X (P5X) is a free-to-play spin-off RPG of the popular Persona series that releases globally on June 26, 2025.
Developed by Perfect World and overseen by Atlus, the original developers of the series, it aims to bring the stylish visuals and compelling gameplay of Persona 5 to mobile and PC.
The game features an original story set in the Persona 5 universe, but with a new cast of characters and a fresh narrative.
Persona 5 The Phantom X gameplay
P5X retains the core turn-based combat system familiar to Persona fans, where players utilize Personas—manifestations of their inner selves—to engage enemies.
The story takes place in modern-day Tokyo, sharing a similar setting to Persona 5, but focuses on a new protagonist and his journey as a Phantom Thief.
The protagonist is a high school student who, after awakening from a nightmare, finds himself in a world drained of hope. He encounters an eloquent owl named Lufel, a long-nosed man, and “a beauty donned in blue.”
Dungeon crawling happens in the Metaverse, a parallel world shaped by human cognition, and dealing with ruinous visions that threaten the protagonist’s daily life.
One key difference is that Persona 5 The Phantom X incorporates a gacha system for obtaining new Personas and characters, which is a significant departure from the mainline Persona games.
