Ever since its introduction in the Kalos region back in the sixth generation of Pokémon, officially debuting in Pokémon X and Y, Mega Evolution has been an ever-popular gimmick amongst fans of the Pokémon franchise, both hardcore and casual players alike.

This sentiment remains true for the fans of the 2016-hit augmented reality game Pokémon GO, and you’ll need Pokémon GO Mega Energy to do it, but we’ll get to that.

Basically, Mega Evolution — or Mega Evolving — is a temporary state of fully-evolved Pokémon where they attain additional stats, thereby making Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving even more powerful than their base final evolution forms.

In Pokémon GO, Mega Evolving results in an increased number of CP of the Mega Pokémon as well as other bonuses such as extra candy when catching Pokémon of the same typing and additional damage to the same attack type of the Mega Pokémon. Thus, with the introduction of Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO back in 2020, this game mechanic is something you need to use if you want to become one of the very best.

But how do you get Mega Pokémon in Pokémon GO?

In the core series games, a player can perform a Mega Evolution when they have these two items: a Key Stone (which is held by the player themselves) and a Mega Stone (which is given to the corresponding Pokémon that is compatible with it)—the only exception to this was with Rayquaza as it only needed to know the move ‘Dragon Ascent’.

The mechanic is even more simplified in the Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! games as the player only needs the required Mega Stone in their bag with the absence of the held item feature in both games.

However, in Pokémon GO, with the absence of held items in the game, Mega Evolutions work differently as a player needs to farm ‘Mega Energy’—a new resource that debuted when Mega Evolution was introduced in the game.

So, how do you get Pokémon GO Mega Energy?

The fastest way to gather Pokémon GO Mega Energy is by completing Mega Raids (or Mega Legendary Raids for Mega Legendary Pokémon).

Mega Raids, as the name suggests, feature Mega Pokémon (with the featured Mega Pokémon rotating every now and then) and successfully completing them grants a player a good amount of Pokémon GO Mega Energy — which is usually enough to Mega Evolve a Pokémon.

The amount of Pokémon GO Mega Energy a player gets is dependent on how fast a raid lobby was able to defeat a Mega Raid boss.

If, by chance, a player is unable to join a Mega Raid or is unable to successfully take one down, an alternative to getting Mega Energy is grinding through Field Research Tasks.

Some Field Research Tasks reward Pokémon GO Mega Energy, although grinding this way would be tedious as the amount of Mega Energy gained is minuscule as compared to the amount gained through Mega Raids.

New Pokemon game revealed for 2025 release and it brings back something special

At the moment, here is a list of Field Research Tasks that reward players with Mega Energy:

  • Catch 10 Normal-type Pokémon – Pidgeot Mega Energy ×10
  • Catch 10 Grass-type Pokémon – Venusaur Mega Energy ×10 or Sceptile Mega Energy ×10
  • Catch 10 Fire-type Pokémon – Charizard Mega Energy ×10 or Blaziken Mega Energy ×10
  • Catch 10 Water-type Pokémon – Blastoise Mega Energy ×10 or Swampert Mega Energy ×10
  • Power up Pokémon 5 times – Venusaur Mega Energy ×10, Charizard Mega Energy ×10, Blastoise Mega Energy ×10, Beedrill Mega Energy ×10, Pidgeot Mega Energy ×10, Manectric Mega Energy ×10, or Aggron Mega Energy ×10
  • Power up Pokémon 10 times – Ampharos Mega Energy ×25, Gardevoir Mega Energy ×25, or Lopunny Mega Energy ×25

Once a player has collected enough Pokémon GO Mega Energy, Mega Evolving a Pokémon is as easy as a click of a button. Do note though that the required amount of Mega Energy required to Mega Evolve a Pokémon differs from Pokémon to Pokémon, a Pokémon’s Mega Level (which is increased every time a Pokémon is Mega Evolved), and a Pokémon’s cooldown timer (which applies to Pokémon that has been recently Mega Evolved and gradually decreases the higher the Mega Level of a Pokémon).

A player can Mega Evolve as many Pokémon as they want but a Pokémon’s Mega Evolved form will only last for eight hours and only one active Mega Evolved Pokémon is allowed at a time.

So, Mega Evolve wisely, and good luck farming Pokémon GO Mega Energy for your daily Pokémon adventures!
