Square Enix has announced a mobile version of its critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14. It’s being helmed by LightSpeed Studios, most notably known for the free-to-play battle royale game PUBG Mobile.
With mobile ports arriving for most notable live-service titles like Call of Duty, Destiny, and Warframe, it was only a matter of time for Final Fantasy 14, which is currently one of the most played MMOs in the world.

But like every other mobile release, one of the biggest questions is whether it will follow a free-to-play model or a paid subscription one like its PC and console counterparts.

Yes, Final Fantasy 14 mobile is a free to play title. You can sign up on its official website to receive future news and updates.
It will likely be traditional mobile live-service title like Wuthering Waves, with regular updates that add new story content and activities.
Is Final Fantasy 14 mobile a gacha game?
No, Final Fantasy 14 is not a gacha game like Destiny Rising and Honkai Star Rail. As of this writing, it’s unknown if it will opt for an optional subscription model like Fallout 1st or ESO Plus to provide exclusive features and rewards.
In a Q&A session with IGN, producer and director Naoki Yoshida provided some insight into the monetization aspect of FF 14 mobile.
He says, “Our goal is to ensure that players can enjoy Final Fantasy XIV for a long time while generating a small and sustainable revenue allowing as many people as possible to play the game. So, there’s no need to worry too much — just dive in and enjoy the game.”
Final Fantasy 14 mobile doesn’t currently have a release date, but play tests in China are expected to kick off soon.
