It’s no surprise that Grand Theft Auto 6, aka GTA 6, is one of the most highly anticipated video games of this generation.

In classic Rockstar fashion, the studio have remained tight-lipped ever since, leaving many fans to wonder if a GTA 6 delay is imminent.

It’s also no surprise that fans have been desperate for more news about the game since Rockstar Games revealed it back in December 2023.

While there hasn’t been any official announcement yet, a former Rockstar dev recently shared an interesting insight into how Rockstar’s delay process works and how it could eventually affect GTA 6’s launch.

It’s too early to determine GTA 6 delay

GTA 6 could get delayed, but the studio may have a hard time determining that until it reaches the last stretch of development, which, in this case, should be around May 2025. This is what Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar Games, seems to suggest.

According to him, the decision to delay GTA 4 was made four months before its original release date. He added that it’s difficult to make the call before that.

For those unaware, GTA 4 was initially scheduled to launch in October 2007 but was eventually delayed to April 2008, the announcement for which came in August.

With that theory and Vermeij’s statement, Rockstar wouldn’t know if GTA 6 needs more time in the oven until May 2025, as the game is currently slated to release in the fall of 2025.

Vermeij added further that GTA 6 has no competition and will sell for 10+ years, which, while isn’t a fact, could happen given the franchise’s history.

However, he also stated that he has no inside information and has not talked to anyone at Rockstar Games, so we recommend taking this as an expert’s opinion rather than a leak.

It’s also worth pointing out that although GTA 4 was a revolutionary game for its time, it came out 16 years ago. Game development has seemingly become more complex with time, and GTA 6 will likely aim to be one of the most technically advanced open world games to date. As such, an early delay announcement wouldn’t seem too far-fetched.

For now, the game is targeting the fall 2025 release window, one that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick seems quite confident in delivering.

GTA 6 will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC port will likely arrive later.
