Sony’s PlayStation 4 continues on its winning ways, having sold more consoles than its rivals, the Microsoft Xbox One.

Sony’s flagship console, the PS4, has sold more than 106 million units worldwide and made over US$1.15 billion in revenue from game sales from retailers and the PS Store as 2019 drew to a close.

In comparison, Microsoft’s Xbox One only sold an estimated 44 million systems according to VGChartz’s report released in September last year.

Interestingly, the PS4 is the second-highest selling console of all time behind the PS2, which sold around 155 million units. The PS4 has already far exceeded the original PlayStation and its predecessor, the PS3 — which sold around 87.4 million units — with around a year still left in its life cycle.

“I am very pleased to see that so many PlayStation fans value the unparalleled entertainment experience on PS4,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The PS4 also boasts a robust player base on top of its record sales, as Sony also revealed that the PlayStation Network had over 103 million active monthly users in December 2019.

Even as its successor, the PS5, has already been slated for a holiday release later this year, the PS4 is still primed for more growth. Highly-anticipated titles, such as The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, are on their way to the system.

“There is much more entertainment experience to look forward to that the PlayStation ecosystem will provide that we can’t wait to share with our fans.”
