During PlayStation’s State of Play event, 2K and Gearbox Software showcased an extensive Borderlands 4 gameplay preview.

Borderlands 4 is the next installment in the renowned looter-shooter series that releases on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a Nintendo Switch 2 release planned later in the year.

New Vault Hunters showcased in Borderlands 4 gameplay

The extensive gameplay reveal offered players a first glimpse at two of the four new Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4.

Vex the Siren demonstrates formidable Siren abilities, capable of self-empowerment or conjuring lethal shades for assistance in combat.

Rafa the Exo-Soldier, a former Tediore trooper, utilizes an experimental exo-suit to digistruct a wide array of weaponry.

Each Vault Hunter promises a distinct play experience, enhanced by the most intricate skill tree system yet seen in a Borderlands title.

Set on the expansive and interconnected world of Kairos, players will confront the tyrannical Timekeeper. For millennia, he has concealed the planet, subjugating its people with cybernetic implants called Bolts and a synthetic military force known as The Order.

Players will journey across Kairos, encountering both familiar and new faces, battling diverse creatures and inhabitants, and engaging with unique factions across four distinct regions all striving to break free from the Timekeeper’s rule.

Allies met during this journey can be recruited to the player’s cause, while enemies will face the full might of the Vault Hunters’ weaponry and abilities.

Expect lethal weaponry from eight manufacturers, both new and familiar, each brandishing unique and devastating strengths. The innovative Licensed Parts system allows for the fusion of behaviors and abilities from different manufacturers into a single weapon.

The Enhancements gear slot provides weapon augmentation based on its manufacturer, rewarding optimized gear loadouts with increased firepower.

Ordnance, a shared slot for Grenades and Heavy Weapons such as rocket launchers, recharges on a cooldown, ensuring players are ready for challenging encounters.

Lastly, Rep Kit gear offers utility, enabling players to heal or activate temporary buffs to gain an advantage in intense combat situations.

The game streamlines cooperative multiplayer with a new system that allows friends to easily form online parties and remain together seamlessly when transitioning between game modes.

Designed with co-op in mind from its inception, the game features instanced loot for every player, dynamic level scaling, and individual difficulty settings, which helps the entire party to stay engaged.
