Sony Interactive Entertainment has teamed up with new esports venture RTS to acquire the Evolution Championship Series, the world’s largest and longest-running fighting game tournament.
The joint venture partnership looks to elevate the global reach, scale, and fan engagement of the Evo brand.
As Sony brings Evo into the PlayStation family, RTS will do its part by sharing its expertise in esports event management, brand and developer consulting, and gaming talent management.
While it looks like Sony and RTS will be calling the shots, Evo co-founders Tom and Tony Cannon will stay close as advisors to ensure that the tournament continues to service the fighting game community and support its vibrant growth.

Sony shared the sentiments as the co-founders, saying that the PlayStation brand is looking forward to growing the fighting game community and its various esports scenes.
“We’re committed to breaking down the barriers for gamers to compete at all levels and providing a best-in-class, global platform for them to showcase their skills,” stated Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The tech conglomerate also noted that fighting games are very popular on PlayStation consoles, logging more than 1.1 billion gameplay hours just in 2020.
Alongside the acquisition, Sony also announced the return of the iconic gaming tournament with Evo Online, which will take place on August 6-8 and 13-15.
