The official Rurouni Kenshin season 2 release date is finally here.

On September 17, 2024, during the Aniplex Online Fest, Linden Films, the Japanese animation studio behind the series, confirmed that Rurouni Kenshin season 2 is part of the Fall 2024 anime lineup.

Season 2 dives into the highly anticipated Kyoto arc, which features the iconic villain Makoto Shishio. The Kyoto arc is considered the original anime’s most intense and beloved storyline.

What is Rurouni Kenshin?

The Rurouni Kenshin manga, written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki, was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, one of Japan’s most popular manga magazines, published by Shueisha. The series debuted on April 25, 1994, and ended on September 21, 1999.

The anime was first adapted into a TV series from 1996 to 1998, and this new version by Linden Films is a fresh reboot of the beloved story.

Set during the early Meiji period in Japan, the series follows the story of Himura Kenshin, a former assassin who has taken a vow of peace.

Season 1 of Rurouni Kenshin follows the story of Himura Kenshin, a former assassin called Hitokiri Battosai, who wandered Japan with a vow never to kill again. Armed with a reverse-bladed sword, he helped people in need while struggling to atone for his violent past.

In Tokyo, Kenshin met Kamiya Kaoru, a young dojo owner, who invited him to stay after he helped protect her school. Along the way, Kenshin formed friendships with Myojin Yahiko, a street kid, and Sagara Sanosuke, a brawler.

Throughout the season, Kenshin faced challenges from old enemies and new foes, testing his resolve to live peacefully. As the season progressed, Kenshin learned that Makoto Shishio, a former assassin like himself, was plotting to overthrow the government.

Realizing the threat Shishio posed, Kenshin decided to leave his peaceful life behind, preparing for a battle that could shape the future of Japan.
