Get ready to experience a huge wave of nostalgia as you re-watch Rimuru’s first encounter with Veldora, the mighty Storm Dragon.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles is an interesting retelling of the original story as it features both 2D and 3D graphical elements.

The first couple hours of gameplay brought back a lot of nice memories back from when I first watched the anime, which put a smile on my face at times. It’s pretty straight to the point too so you won’t have to worry about sitting through a plot point that drags on.

If you’re expecting additional story content, you unfortunately won’t find it here as the game puts a big emphasis on following the story as faithfully as possible to the original material.

Side scrolling action gameplay never went out of fashion

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles has taken a very retro approach to its choice of gameplay elements and style. This game is a side scrolling action RPG where you explore areas and kick plenty of monster booty for that juicy loot.

Combat is surprisingly fun as it felt really similar to the classic 2D old-school fighting game control scheme. Certain button inputs trigger particular skills. Once you learn what button does what, combat is insanely fun and full of action.

Speaking of skills, this game is incredibly flashy especially once you start to use a lot of special skills. Many abilities have animations that will pause the game till the animation plays out. This could be jarring if you prefer more fluid combat experiences, so be mindful of that if you like to be immersed during fight sequences.

Navigating dungeons was super easy, which to a fault made them feel shallow at times since I felt I was clearing them too fast. This could be a good thing if you prefer more action since it takes no time at all to run into a battle.

There is some nation building involved in this game, however, the buildings themselves are more so to buff up your characters. It pays to build up the nation, but it isn’t something that you’ll need to invest a lot of time doing. It’s a feature that helps but is also not a big focus in the game.

Recruit and play as one of your favorite characters from the anime

A leader needs his people, and you have so many characters to pick from.

You’ll be playing in a party of five for the majority of the game, and you’ll recruit plenty of familiar faces as you progress through the story.

Everyone you recruit plays differently and has their own strengths and weaknesses, giving us players plenty of options for when we get stuck on a certain boss.

If you’re not a fan of swapping characters, you can also technically get away with running the same party for most of the game since Rimuru is crazy strong and versatile.

A game true slime fans will appreciate

Perhaps a surprise compared to what is typically seen on the market when it comes to anime games, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles was a pleasant surprise especially when it came to choice of its core gameplay mechanics.

Sure, some might say side scrolling action is outdated but it was such a breath of fresh air especially with how saturated the market is with open world exploration games.

I enjoyed the game’s focus on retelling the story and letting me experience all Rimuru’s crazy fights from the anime for myself. The game is literally about the slime, and I’m glad it didn’t stray from the source material.
