This year’s Tokyo Game Show has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The event was scheduled to take place September 24-27 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
The TGS Management Office has announced that an alternative online event is being planned. More information will be announced later this month.
“Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and [with] the situation remain[ing] unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors, and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation,” said the TGS Management Office on the event website.

This is the first time Tokyo Game Show has been canceled since it debuted in 1996. It is the latest in a long list of major gaming trade shows that have been canceled or at least postponed due to the ongoing health crisis that COVID-19 has caused all over the world.
In previous weeks, E3 and Gamescom were also forced to suspend their physical events. They are likewise looking at online broadcasts, similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X event, to fill the void left by the affected live events.
