Destiny 2 is having a whirlwind of a year, but what is Destiny Rising and what do we know about it?
While the Final Shape expansion provided a befitting conclusion to its light and darkness saga, the accompanying Episode Echoes and multiple turbulent events at Bungie led to an unprecedented downfall of morale among fans and the people who have worked tirelessly on this game.
What is Destiny Rising?
Fast forward to now, and Destiny’s future is looking suspiciously bright again, with the reveal of the new expansion, Destiny Apollo, as well as a detailed roadmap for 2025. However, there has been another intriguing revelation, this time about a Destiny spinoff mobile game called Destiny Rising.
If you’re curious to know what this rumored Destiny mobile game is all about, you’re in the right place. This ONE Esports guide explains everything you need to know about the rumored new title.
Destiny Rising is reportedly an MMORPG with Hero characters
It seems Bungie is collaborating with NetEase Games, a prominent Chinese mobile game company, to develop Destiny Rising. As spotted by thegamepost on a job description by a former NetEase employee’s LinkedIn account, Destiny Rising is an “MMORPG” with “high standards.”
Destiny 2 is one of the most polished and premium live-service games on the market, so it’s no surprise that its mobile spinoff would also adhere to its high standards. What is surprising, however, is the statement from notable game journalist Jeff Grubb, who claims it will have “Hero characters” instead of the option to build your own character.
Grubb’s statement suggests that Destiny Rising will be a free-to-play gacha game, which should seem surprising to Bungie fans but not so surprising to people familiar with NetEase’s other projects.
A Destiny gacha game doesn’t seem too far-fetched, given the game’s popularity in the Asian market. That said, it would still be interesting to see how this business model fits into Destiny 2’s looter-shooter gameplay formula.
Destiny Rising will reportedly feature first-person and third-combat, similar to Destiny 2, but we don’t know the extent of it.
When can you expect Destiny Rising?
There is no release date for the rumored new title right now because the game hasn’t been officially announced by Bungie or NetEase. However, Grubb claims that an announcement could happen soon.
It seems the game is primarily being helmed by NetEase, with only a few people from Bungie working on the project, which makes sense since the Seattle-based studio is currently spread out thin between Destiny 2’s upcoming expansions and its highly anticipated extraction shooter Marathon.
