Diablo 4 brings with it both new as well as old mechanics, but don’t fret, we’re here to explain them for you, so you can focus on slaying demons.
This time we’ll be going over a new mechanic called overpower damage. This is the latest mechanic that has both new and longtime Diablo fans unsure as to what it does.
It joins the head scratch-inducing lucky hit as a top term searched for when it comes to the popular Blizzard title.

Diablo 4 overpower damage numbers are shown in blue
If you’re just looking at the in-game tooltip, overpower damage “deals bonus damage based on the sum of your current life and fortify.” You’ll know you’ve got an overpowered hit when the light blue damage numbers appear.
If you see an orange number, that means you hit with both overpower and critically — nice job.
So then the question is, well how do you trigger this extra damage? That would be any time you use a skill at all. It’s only a flat 3% chance, however, and it’s not something you can get gear to improve that number directly.
While your overpower chance can’t go up from 3%, specific effects can guarantee it according to Blizzard. These range from certain skills, items, and nodes on the paragon board.
If you find yourself seeing lots of blue and orange numbers, it may be worth investing into your life and fortify a bit more to increase how much damage you’re outputting on those hits.
Also important to know is that any damage over time, channeled skills, or passives cannot overpower.
