If you aren’t sure who to support from the 31 teams competing at the Pokémon UNITE World Championships, WonderChef has you covered.
The Pokémon UNITE World Championships is right around the corner and this is the best time to have some spicy takes.
In an exclusive interview with Evan “WonderChef” Hashimoto, one of the casters for the World Championships 2023 in Yokohama, find out who he thinks will win this year’s championships.
Who is WonderChef?
WonderChef has been part of the Pokémon scene for many years. Mostly known as one of the resident casters for Pokkén Tournament and its re-release version, Pokkén Tournament DX for Play! Pokemon, including the first and final World Championships in 2022.
Now that Pokkén Tournament is no longer included in the roster of games for the Pokémon World Championships, he has made a new home with Pokémon UNITE.
The top three teams at the World Championships according to WonderChef
WonderChef gave us some spicy details about who he thinks are his top three for the World Championships — Talibobo Believers from the Europe Region, Luminosity Gaming from the North America Region, and Entity7 from the Latin America Region.
These teams are well known in their respective regions and even WonderChef recognizes this — at least for Talibobo Believers.
“Talibobo Believers, it’s so hard not to say this. They have been so dominant, but my hot take is that there is a good chance that they won’t win.” Of all the teams competing at the World Championships, many believe Talibobo Believers have the best chance to win it all after their phenomenal performance all year long.
This dominance may come with a potentially devastating setback, however — a lack of experience playing from behind. You’ll often see this team take initiative and force their opponents to play their game, and time will tell if anyone can force Talibobo Believers out of their comfort zone.
The second team on WonderChef’s list is Luminosity Gaming. “Even though they did not win any International Challenges, I think their game plan is better than it has ever been.”
One of Luminosity’s biggest issues this year was their drafting, according to WonderChef. The team has worked hard to improve and adapt their drafts, with all this practice, Chef believes there’s no way Luminosity will let those mistakes happen again.
But out of everything, the spiciest fried noodles that the chef is cooking — he thinks that this year is the year for Latin America.
“We saw Entity7 play against Amaterasu in some tournaments, and they played so well — and so do the Brazilian teams. It’s really hard for me to choose one, but all I know is that this is going to be the year of LATAM.”

WonderChef’s thoughts on the competing Asia teams
Understandably, most of the teams on WonderChef’s list came from the West. When asked about Asia, he simply couldn’t choose one.
“There’s so many! It’s so tough — it’s impossible to choose! All the Japanese teams are looking really good. There’s also OMO Abyssinian, which is another team that looks like they know exactly what they’re going for. Any of the teams in the East can easily knock my top three.”
To this date, Trainers still have the east v.s. west discussion, and we’re about to see the end of this debate in the upcoming World Championships.
The Pokémon World Championships will be the culminating event for all competitive Pokémon series, including Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the trading card game, Pokémon GO, and of course, Pokémon UNITE.
It will be held August 11 to 13 in Yokohama, Japan, the first time the World Championships will be held in the country.
Make sure to catch all the games live on August 11 and 12, streaming on YouTube, Facebook, or Twitch.
