Whether you want to tunnel beneath the earth, glide through the skies, or brave the waters of Natlan, there’s a Saurian ready to do all of that just for you.
Saurian Indwelling, a new mechanic introduced in Genshin Impact version 5.0, lets players merge their spirits with Saurians, powerful beasts unique to the Pyro region.
By tapping into their unique abilities, you can seamlessly navigate the diverse landscapes of Natlan.
In this ONE Esports guide, we’ll walk you through all the Saurians and their abilities, helping you master this exciting new feature.
What are Saurians?
Saurians are a fascinating species of dragon-like creatures native to Natlan in Genshin Impact. Having evolved alongside the Natlan residents, they’ve become deeply intertwined with the region’s culture and way of life.
As of writing, there are three distinct Saurians in the game, each equipped with unique skills to help travelers navigate the region’s landscapes.
First, we have the Tepetlisaurus, the mining companions of the Children of Echoes. Resembling an armadillo with a gleaming golden horn, these creatures excel at burrowing through the earth.
Next is the Yumkasaurus, an agile and swift Saurian beloved by the Scions of the Canopy.
Lastly, the People of the Springs cherish the Koholasaurus, a sleek and powerful swimmer, perfect for effortlessly gliding through the waters of Natlan.
Saurian Indwelling basics
How to Indwell Saurians in Genshin Impact
To indwell a Saurian, approach one until a fiery icon appears near the skills button. This indicates that you’re now able to fuse your spirit with the creature.
Once you’ve indwelled, your interface will change to reflect a new set of controls: attack, skill, and jump buttons.
Jumping and attacking are free actions that don’t consume any phlogiston, but be mindful—using the Saurian’s special skill will drain this resource.
What is Phlogiston in Genshin Impact
Phlogiston is a special high-temperature energy that flows throughout Natlan. It powers various devices in the region and, most importantly, fuels the abilities of Saurians when players are indwelled with them.
The player’s phlogiston meter is located above the HP bar, while each Saurian has its bar that appears beside the character when using skills.
When your phlogiston is depleted, you’ll need to replenish it by finding an energy source. You can restore it by touching phlogiston, destroying specific objects, or collecting energy.
While these sources are usually unmarked, you can identify them by their radiant glow.
Fortunately, you can still indwell a Saurian and move about even when you’re out of phlogiston. However, without this energy, you won’t be able to activate the Saurian’s special skills.
All Saurian abilities in Genshin Impact
Tepetlisaurus
These charming creatures can typically be found in the northern part of the map, nestled between the Children of Echoes settlement and the rocky terrain of the Sulfurous Veins.
Once a Tepetlisaurus digs into the ground, it can consume phlogiston to move freely in all directions, including scaling cliffs by tunneling upward.
While in this underground state, performing a jump will unleash a swift, high-speed leap forward, allowing for quick traversal or strategic repositioning.
Yumkasaurus
The Yumkasaurus has a unique ability to expel a sticky substance known as Flamegranate pectin from its cheek pouches.
It uses this adhesive to latch onto heavy objects and sigils, swiftly pulling itself toward them to navigate the terrain with ease.
You can even hold the button to hover and aim in the direction you wish to travel.
However, repeated use of this movement in a short time requires phlogiston consumption, so managing your energy wisely is key to making the most of this agile Saurian’s abilities.
Koholasaurus
The Koholosaurus excels at high-speed swimming, making it the ideal companion for navigating Natlan’s waters. They are usually found on the Ameyalco Waters near the People of the Springs settlement.
It can leap high above the water’s surface to dodge obstacles and use Aqua Dash to charge forward with incredible speed.
Uniquely, the Koholosaurus is also the only Saurian capable of traversing liquid phlogiston after consuming phlogiston, allowing it to move effortlessly through these otherwise impassable energy pools.
