G2 Esports has advanced to the semifinals of the 2020 League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) after a 3-0 sweep over LCK’s Gen.G. ONE Esports was able to catch up with the team and ask them how it feels to be Korea’s biggest nightmare right now.

With G2 having a lot of experience against Korean teams, Luka “Perkz” Perković said that he still had business to do due to former Samsung Galaxy player Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk knocking them out of Worlds in 2017.

“I think I finished the business today,” said Perkz. “In 2017, we lost 0-2 to Samsung in groups and now we managed to beat them 3-0 so it feels good. We just play better in general and it doesn’t feel like the wins are lucky. It just feels like we’re the better team and that feels pretty good.”

With their next opponent being another LCK team in DAMWON, Perkz was excited to spark another rivalry with the young and talented team.

“I did see that ShowMaker wants to beat G2 and how he wishes we won against Gen.G so he doesn’t care if there’s one LCK team in the finals for sure,” stated Perkz. “I feel sorry for the LCK that they will not have a single team in the final. “

With the easy win, G2 head coach Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann saw the weaknesses that Gen.G had in their gameplay.

Despite being the top-tier LCK team, the team was not able to adapt to the situation and GrabbZ easily predicted how their approach was going to be. Even though Kim “Clid” Tae-min and Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong did not really shine as the team’s playmakers, the G2 coach believed that the two basically had a bad day and that the series doesn’t reflect their performances this year.

While G2 dominated the LCK region in Worlds 2019, Rasmus “Caps” Winther believed that the current meta leaves little room for innovation and has teams drafting strikingly similar compositions.

“Last year, all the LCK teams were slow teams that were playing mainly for drakes and we were really creative in getting things in side-lane or getting other forms of leads,” said Caps. “But in this meta right now, I don’t think we don’t really have that edge over LCK teams. All teams kind of play the same way right now, but I still think we’re a strong team, regardless of meta and match-up. Regardless if it’s an LCK, LPL, or EU team, I think we can take everyone down.”

With G2 eliminating DAMWON from Worlds 2019, the upcoming semifinal series is seen as a grudge match for the DWG players. Although Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu said that they have a better chance at winning because of their significant improvements and G2’s shaky season performance, Martin “Wunder” Hansen struck back by saying that DWG is not an issue for them.

“Honestly, I haven’t put much thought into playing against DAMWON because, in my opinion, we should just focus on ourselves this week and it depends on if Suning or Top wins, then we’ll start preparing for either of those teams,” said Wunder. “I don’t think DAMWON is really a threat to us since we usually beat all the Korean teams anyway so that’s my take on it.”

G2 Esports will face DAMWON Gaming on October 24, 6 p.m. (GMT+8).
