Updated on January 22, 1:17 p.m. (GMT+8): Added an update from Riot Phroxzon.
Riot Games is making even more changes to the League of Legends rank 2024 season.
There were already several; modifications to the ranked ladder last year. The addition of Emerald, which sits between Platinum and Diamond, and larger LP gains inevitably affected ranked player distribution.
Season 14 Split 1 commenced on January 10, 2024. LoL Lead Gameplay Designer Matt “Riot Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison stated on X on the same day that the team is implementing a slew of changes with regards to rank, and elaborated further on January 15.
LP gains and losses aren’t the same in League of Legends rank 2024 season

“We were not demoting people often enough (especially from tier boundaries like E4, P4, etc.), there were many cases where a player was Emerald with Gold MMR or Platinum with Silver MMR,” Riot Phroxzon stated.
Because of this, he would like players to be aware that some placements might feel “brutal” as a result.
“Unfortunately, this was one of the side effects of making better visible rank matches this season and it’s our bad for allowing these ‘inflated’ situations last season in the first place,” he said, reiterating Riot’s commitment to improving the situation this season forward.

Specifically, these are the LP gains and losses players can expect for those in Emerald and below:
- Gains below Emerald will be centered around +-28 or so (pending further review)
- Getting short spurts of +27/-29 and +29/-27 below Emerald is normal
- There are some cases that Riot Games is looking into where players are losing a lot at tier boundaries but aren’t “demoting as intended.” These will lead to heavy negative LP gains as the system tries to pull you down to where you should be
These are the LP gains and losses players can expect for those in Emerald and above:
- Gains in Emerald+ will be centered around +-20 this season
- Getting short spurts of +19/-21 and +21/-19 in Emerald+ are pretty normal (typically there will be about equal of each), especially when losing a few times at tier boundaries

Riot Phroxzon added that winning a lot or losing a lot at tier boundaries will result in negative LP gains.
On 22 January, he provided a second major update about rank 2024 LP gains. “At end of last season, 40% of players had negative LP gains. Right now it’s 3%,” he wrote on X.
“We have fixes for the issues that are causing this 3% and intend to bring it down to 0-1%. (I would say 0, but there are some edge cases that are not possible to resolve without wider consequences). There will be some adjustments this patch and some next patch.”
