Solar and lunar eclipses have always been quite a sight to see around the world. The earth begins to appear dimmer as celestial bodies pass by and block light from or to another. In a total lunar eclipse, the moon adopts a reddish orange color, also known as a blood moon, while a diamond ring effect shows up in a total solar eclipse.

In the League of Legends universe, Solar and Lunar Eclipse skins exist led by an order of knights that harness their powers from the moon and sun. Playing on the ideas of the cosmos and runic magic, this skin line is a thematic opposition to Coven.

Bathing under the blue and purple glow of the lunar eclipse, or radiating a fiery red and orange light from the solar eclipse — which of these skins are out of this world? We rank all six LoL Eclipse skins based on their splash arts, in-game look, and particle effects.

Ranking Solar and Lunar Eclipse skins in League of Legends

6. Lunar Eclipse Senna
5. Solar Eclipse Sejuani
4. Solar Eclipse Sivir
3. Lunar Eclipse Aatrox
2. Sun-Eater Kayle
1. Solar/Lunar Eclipse Leona

Out of all the Eclipse skins, Lunar Eclipse Senna takes the cake for having a lackluster design and being out of place.

Rather than incorporating drawings and symbols, Lunar Eclipse Senna plays with the harmony of blue and purple colors for its particle effects, making it look quite lacking compared to the other skins. On the bright side, her Curse of the Black Mist ability has a pretty nice stained glass pattern that goes well with her glowing purple AoE.

Our biggest beef is her Relic Cannon, which looks very modern and a tad inappropriate seeing how the rest of the champions carry medieval weaponry.

5. Solar Eclipse Sejuani

Most of Sejuani’s skins are tied to her Freljord origin, showing off blue, icy designs — her Solar Eclipse skin is a bit different.

In this skin, Sejuani and her drüvask boar, Bristle, wear sturdy pieces of armor bearing the Eclipse Knights’ symbol glowing in warm, orange tones. Bristle’s new form, in particular, resembles an owlbear creature from Dungeons & Dragons.

Sejuani’s ultimate, Glacial Prison, summons a storm that traps enemies inside an odd, orange block of ice. A few tweaks are needed on the strange block’s design to make this skin top-tier.

4. Solar Eclipse Sivir

Another legendary skin in this line, Sivir wears a tight-fitting outfit, which complements her long red hair. She transforms into a burning sun goddess upon casting her ultimate ability, On the Hunt, which also shows a brief and gorgeous animation of the stages of a solar eclipse. A total eclipse can be seen in her recall animation, summoned from the center of her shield.

The effects and animations on the rest of Sivir’s abilities needs a bit more flair for her Solar Eclipse skin to really look and feel like a legendary skin.

3. Lunar Eclipse Aatrox

In the skin line’s lore, Aatrox is a member of the Eclipse Knights and is a loyal servant of the Sun-Eater Kayle.

The Lunar Eclipse Aatrox skin shows the Darkin Blade in a silver armor powered by the moon, with a matching, glowing purple greatsword. Casting his ultimate, World Ender, unleashes his demonic form, which adds an intimidating pair of metallic wings to his overall look.

Riot Games did a great job on working on Lunar Eclipse Aatrox’s animations and effects, especially in his ultimate form where you can spot runic details and a few phases of the moon.

2. Sun-Eater Kayle

Is that a biblically accurate angel? Why no, it’s actually Sun-Eater Kayle!

Sun-Eater Kayle or Solar Eclipse Kayle doesn’t just play with light and dark effects, but puts the angelic warrior in a unique skin and refreshing concept as someone who devoured the primordial sun and gained its powers. The helmed champion is gone, and in her place is a hauntingly beautiful winged creature with a fiery, cracked skin.

Loaded with good particle effects and incredible recall animations, it’s hard to resist Kayle’s newest epic skin.

1. Solar/Lunar Eclipse Leona

Leona’s legendary skins, Solar and Lunar, are the best ones in this lot.

Solar and Lunar Eclipse Leona present the LoL champion in literally different lights, harnessing the power of the sun and moon in both skins’ design and particle effects. The Solari warrior sports heavier pieces of armor in her Eclipse skins, making Leona look more solid and reliable as a tanky LoL support. Her shield is also bigger and bulkier and emits a magical glow from the eclipses.

Each of these Eclipse skins have their own charm, making them must-buys for Leona mains. Solar Eclipse Leona transforms the radiant dawn’s ultimate ability, Solar Flare, into a fiery yet dazzling AoE spell. Lunar Eclipse Leona’s recall simply stands out with its elaborate animation, showing off the intricate details of Leona’s shield in cool blue and purple hues.

Whichever Eclipse Leona skin you choose, every RP will surely be worth it.
