Arcane season 2’s first act has been a whirlwind of shocking events, from the tragic death of Cassandra Kiramman to Viktor’s transformation into a Messianic figure and Mel Medarda’s abduction by the Black Rose organization.
The Vi and Caitlyn kiss scene, in particular, captured the hearts of many fans, as seen in episode 3, “Finally Got the Name Right.”
While the scene itself is a poignant and romantic milestone in the characters’ relationship, the behind-the-scenes story of its voice recording is equally fascinating.
Vi voice actor Hailee Steinfeld revealed an anecdote during the first episode of Arcane Afterglow, an aftershow that looks into the details of season 2.
Hailee Steinfeld on the Vi and Caitlyn kiss scene: “We earned that moment”
To accurately portray the intimacy of the Vi and Caitlyn kiss scene, Hailee Steinfeld had to mimic the sound by kissing the back of her hand.
“It did feel like this moment that no one was supposed to be witnessing,” she explained.
She emphasized the significance of the Vi and Caitlyn kiss scene, highlighting the emotional journey of the two characters.
“There’s such a payoff, and we earned that moment,” she said. “It’s a really beautiful scene.”
“It means a lot,” agreed Ella Purnell, the voice actor for Jinx.
“It’s one of the few, really fragile moments for Vi because she’s always such a powerhouse,” Arcane co-creator Christian “Praeco” Linke said. “Here she’s just so like ‘My God, am I gonna lose you, too?'”
This tender moment between Caitlyn Kiramman, a Piltover enforcer, and Violet, a Zaunite with a troubled past, highlights the depth of their relationship. Initially united by the shared goal of finding Silco and Jinx, the two characters eventually forge a strong bond.
When asked about voicing other Arcane characters, Ella and Hailee shared their picks.
If given the chance, Ella Purnell would love to voice the scientist, Heimerdinger, while Hailee Steinfeld is drawn to Piltover Councilor Mel Medarda. Hailee particularly admires Mel’s subtlety and intrigue.
Reflecting on the impact of Arcane, Hailee shared her experience of watching the trailer for the first time. She realized that the show’s cinematic quality “deserves to be seen in a theater-like experience.”
