Riot has allegedly finally agreed to work with parent company Tencent on a mobile version of the popular MOBA, reported Reuters. Tencent had proposed a mobile port of the game years ago, but had been rejected by Riot.
Tencent then went on to develop its own mobile MOBA, Honor of Kings (also known as Arena of Valor), which launched in November 2015 and has since become the world’s highest grossing mobile game.
While Riot and Tencent seem to have made up their differences over a mobile port of LoL, it looks like there are still some issues that need to be ironed out, as the game has reportedly been in development for over a year and, according to Reuter’s source, is unlikely to be launched in 2019.
One of the reasons Riot may have finally agreed to a mobile version of LoL is its falling revenue numbers. While LoL brought in US$1.4 billion in revenue last year, that’s still down 21% from 2017, which saw the moba make US$2.1 billion.
Riot may be trying to expand its user base by targeting the Asian market, specifically China, which spent US$23 billion on mobile games last year.
