MPL Malaysia is one of the most consistent MPL regions in the world. Having qualified for every international MLBB tournament, they’re a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
However, the region has one glaring difference compared to its MPL Philippines and MPL Indonesian counterparts — they have yet to win an international championship.
In an exclusive interview with ONE Esports during the M5 World Championship, Filipino import for Team SMG Deomark “Mikko” Tabangay shared what MPL MY teams can learn from Filipino teams when competing in international tournaments.

He competed in MPL PH during Seasons 10 and 11 under the Smart Omega banner before transitioning to a different region in Season 12 by joining Team SMG. This experience led him to observe a distinct contrast between the two leagues.
“MPL PH teams exhibit a higher resilience in-game compared to MPL MY teams,” Mikko said.
“Filipino teams excel in predicting the enemy’s next move, showcasing a proactive approach, while Malaysian teams tend to be more reactive. Filipino teams are consistently one step ahead,” he added.
MPL PH teams have established themselves as unparalleled contenders in the MLBB esports scene, evidenced by their consecutive victories in the M-series tournaments: Bren Esports at M2, Blacklist International at M3, and ECHO at M4.
“Filipinos always focus on the prize and possess a genuine determination to win,” said Mikko. “This stands in stark contrast to the mindset of some Malaysian teams, who seemed content with only making it to the top eight.”
