ONIC Esports defeats Geek Fam in the grand final to make history in MPL ID
ONIC overcame both Bigetron Alpha and Geek Fam in deciding games in their return to the grand final.
Meanwhile, Geek Fam achieved its first-ever finals appearance after beating Dewa United Esports in the play-ins, pulling off a reverse sweep against RRQ in the upper bracket semifinals, and eliminating Bigetron Alpha in the lower bracket final.
In the first two games of the title series, ONIC posted lopsided victories, with the durable frontline duo of Regular Season Most Valuable Player Kairi “Kairi” Rayosdelsol‘s jungle Fredrinn and First Team Roamer Nicky “Kiboy” Pontonuwu’s Rafaela leading the charge.
Kairi and Kiboy enabled their teammates to unleash damage while they tanked the attacks from Geek Fam, resulting in a 14-minute win in game one with a 17-5 kill score, and a 19-minute triumph in game 2 with a 23-4 score.
Kiboy once again played a crucial role in the third game using Mathilda, providing his allies with spectacular support through timely activations of Guiding Wind. He tallied a 1/3/17 KDA and a 95% kill participation in the 21-minute victory to bring his squad to championship point.
However, Geek Fam refused to be swept, relying on Luke “LUKE” Valentinus’ Uranus to methodically take game four while leaning on Allen “Baloyskie” Baloy’s Mathilda to make a huge comeback from a 10,000 gold deficit in game five.
ONIC finally regained its poise in the sixth game, as Kiboy on Hilda aggressively invaded Geek Fam’s jungle in the early game with help from the Angela of Gilang “SANZ”.
That allowed the Yellow Porcupines to snowball and take control of the map, confidenty securing objectives to cap off their historic championship run in a 16-minute victory.
For his impressive performance in the series, Kiboy won the Finals MVP award.
ONIC Esports and Geek Fam will represent the region in the upcoming M5 World Championship scheduled in December in the Philippines.
