The Mobile Legends professional league of Indonesia received shocking news when James “Jamesss” Chen confirmed that he will no longer be coaching for RRQ Hoshi.
The org announced the departure after the team’s short-lived appearance at the Mobile Legends M2 World Championship. Despite being one of Indonesia’s strongest squads in the competition, RRQ was unable to fully realize their King of Kings status after losing to Bren Esports in the playoffs bracket.
Regardless of the missed opportunity, many believed that Jamesss still had a decorated time with RRQ, racking up championship wins in two MPL ID seasons and the first MPL Invitational.
Jamesss has officially stepped away from his recognized position, but many are still wondering what made the hotshot coach leave with such a successful career.
After the announcement, ONE Esports spoke to RRQ co-owner Calvin Thenderan to clarify and clear up the news circulating about their former coach.
Calvin was very frank about the whole situation, saying that the beloved coach left with good intentions and had no bad blood with the Indonesian org.
“Jamesss decided to resign even before M2 started because he wanted to complete his education,” said the RRQ co-owner.

Back in the first World Championship, RRQ managed to convince Jamesss into joining the troop, but he had to temporarily postpone his studying efforts. With the coach getting older in the world of esports, his return to education was a way for him to open up his career options and prepare his future after esports.
Calvin further clarified that Jamesss’ resignation did not mean that his career as a coach was unstable. The two even discussed the possibility of the Singaporean coach working at the management level.
“RRQ as a team is always open to various things,” said Calvin. “RRQ is not just about playing games. There are many more things that can be done behind the scenes. We are working hand in hand to make dreams come true.”
Looking back at RRQ’s earlier days, Jamesss played a big role in their development as a top ID team. As one of very few coaches at the berth of the MPL ID scene alongside Bjorn “Zeys” Ong of EVOS Legends, he laid down the foundations of a structured work system that brought out the best in players.
“Jamesss has incorporated a professional system into RRQ that is easy to follow,” stated Calvin. “He studied opponents closely and our draft improved upon his arrival. That is why I feel that Jamesss is one of the key factors in RRQ’s success.”
Moving forward, RRQ will enter MPL ID Season 7 as the defending champs with new faces in the squad. The team has brought in Adi Syofian “Acil” Asyauri as the returning head coach and ex-Bigetron player Fadhil “Taka” Asra to bolster their line-up.
If the King of Kings can transition well with its newest members, there’s a likely chance that they’ll confidently defend their MPL throne.
