After two years of checks and tests, Rocket League has officially been approved for commercial release by the Chinese government. The game is expected to be released in China as a free-to-play title, a distinct advantage that this market will have over the rest of the world.
The rocket-racing-meets-football game was greenlit by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and TV of the People’s Republic of China following a rigorous two-year beta period.
Rocket League was one of 24 titles that received such approval at the end of July 2019. No official release date has been announced, however.
With the go-ahead, game developer Psyonix and local game distributor Tencent will finally be able to push forward with their plans to expand Rocket League’s reach in China. Psyonix and Tencent first announced their partnership in 2017, laying the groundwork for a full-fledged Rocket League esports ecosystem in this market.
As of 2018, Chinese esports organizations Edward Gaming (EDG) and Royal Never Give-Up (RNG) have already invested in dedicated Rocket League divisions.
