Jayson “Fireburner” Nunez is calling it quits as a Rocket League player. The vehicular soccer gaming icon will have one last hurrah at DreamHack Pro Circuit: Valencia 2019 in early July before hanging up his jersey for good.
Fireburner announced his decision in a heartfelt Twitlonger post, admitting that playing competitively has “not been nearly as fun for (him) as it once was”.
The American-Colombian esports veteran plans to remain active in the Rocket League community, shifting his focus towards “coaching an RLCS team”. He also plans to be more active in the content creation side, alluding to a bigger presence in the Twitch and YouTube streaming communities in the near future.
Fireburner built an unmistakable reputation as a master of the race-car derby-meets-soccer video game genre. Already adept at Rocket League’s predecessor, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, Fireburner immediately made an impact when the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) was established in 2016.
His outstanding performances and dedication to the game also helped put Rocket League on the map. To date, Fireburner is one of only two players to appear in all seven seasons of the RLCS World Championship LAN staged so far.
